What are prebiotics?
Prebiotics and probiotics are sometimes confused. We wanted to explain prebiotics, which are an important support element for the digestive system. What are prebiotics?
Definition of Prebiotics
Prebiotics are indigestible food components that promote the growth and development of beneficial microorganisms in the human gut. Prebiotics offer numerous benefits, including maintaining a healthy gut flora (i.e., microbiome) and strengthening the immune system.
Benefits of Prebiotics
Prebiotics are components often referred to as dietary fiber. These are carbohydrates and sugar alcohols that cannot be fully broken down and absorbed by the digestive system. Prebiotics are a food source for beneficial bacteria (especially bifidobacteria and lactobacillus) that naturally occur in the gut. These bacteria are important for gut health and are nourished by prebiotics.
Natural Sources of Prebiotics
Natural sources of prebiotics include beans, onions, garlic, leeks, artichokes, asparagus, bananas, oats, barley, whole-wheat bread, oatmeal, and some legumes.
