A Bio-Sweetener: Stevia

In recent years, stevia (also known as sugar leaf or sugar plant) has been one of the most researched natural sweeteners. Stevia has been used as a sweetener and food additive in Paraguay, Brazil, and more recently in Japan for a long time. The extract derived from stevia is known to regulate blood sugar levels. Some studies support its use in diabetes treatment.

Content of Stevia

Stevia leaves are rich in phenolic compounds. They also contain vitamin C, carotenoids, chlorophylls, and have antimicrobial and antioxidant properties.

Where Does Stevia Grow?

Stevia grows in humid environments, typically reaching a height of 60-90 cm, at an average temperature of 25°C, and some species thrive at altitudes between 2300-2900 meters. It belongs to the Asteraceae family.

What Does Stevia Taste Like?

Stevia is zero-calorie. Because of the compounds it contains, fresh stevia is 10-15 times sweeter than regular sugar, and dried stevia is 200-300 times sweeter. Sweeteners like stevia are substances that are sweeter than the same amount of sugar but contain fewer calories. Stevia is a widely used natural sweetener in many products. It is especially suitable for people with obesity, hypertension, and diabetes. However, it is always recommended to consult your doctor before consumption. We do not recommend Stevia-containing products to those who are allergic to plants like chamomile.
